FAQs

Who is in charge of the SCC?

True to the word collective in our name, the Core Sisters who maintain the SCC are a group of ten people who share responsibilities. No hierarchies over here!

Is the SCC for City College students only?

No. The SCC started at City College in Transnational Feminisms taught by Dr. Griselda Rodriguez, and was therefore founded by students of the school. We’re making an active effort to organize beyond CCNY.

Is the SCC an official club at City College?

No. The SCC just is. We are able to coordinate events on campus through the International Studies Program, the Student Association for International Studies, and Office of Student Life primarily.

You use a lot of terms that I don’t understand – do you have a glossary?

Not yet – but we highly recommend the Glossary of terms from the folks of Guerilla Feminism. They’re amazing.

Is the SCC for People of Color (PoC) only?

No – however – we do reserve the right to call for PoC only circles or events.

How can I get involved?

Why a Phoenix for the logo?

We’re often asked why we chose a Phoenix for our organization’s logo. Why did we?

– The Phoenix bird represents renewal and rebirth, and is a mythological creature found throughout several ancient cultures including Mesoamerica, Phoenicia, Greece, Egypt, China, and Persia. In particular, when a Phoenix dies, and is in turn resurrected from the ashes – it begins it’s life again. We at the Sister Circle Collective believe that this is the ultimate example of self-agency and new beginnings. It is never too late to redirect or rediscover not only your path but yourself.

    Dear Sister Circle Collective,

    My name is Melissa Maldonado-Salcedo.
I reached out to you a few days ago but I really want to ask you to consider joining UNITE to Face Addiction.

I’d love to connect with one of you as I believe that the addiction crisis is an important feminist issue because of the ways that it disproportionately impacts women. I would love to talk.
